5th Grade

This week in class, we started off with Language MAP testing. We then reviewed the types of sentences, and we discussed a 9/11 writing assignment.  Students have one week to interview an adult of their choice about questions involving 9/11. This is due Wednesday, Sept. 18!

Towards the end of the week, we discussed how to write a paragraph, and we graded unit 2 vocab pages.

Next Friday (Sept. 20), students will have a unit 2 vocab quiz.

VOCAB QUIZZES/TESTS:

Pease help your students study for their bi-weekly quizzes! Their vocab words are their spelling words, as well as their vocabulary words, in which they need to know the definitions. They are responsible for spelling each word, and knowing the definitions enough to match them to the correct word. After the first few units, students will begin to have 3 review words on each quiz to total 15 words on each quiz. These extra words will be written in their planners :-)

If at any time, you have questions about our Language classes, please feel free to contact me by email at sfisher@grovecitychristian.org.

6th Grade

We started off our week by MAP testing for Language. We then reviewed possessive nouns and practiced using them.

Students were able to work on Membean this week, too! Membean is an online vocabulary site that students are introduced to in 6th grade, and they work with this program all the way through 12th grade. We did 15 minutes on Tuesday, and 15 minutes on Thursday, so students should have been able to complete their 30 weekly minutes in class.

Membean Explanation:

Membean is an online vocabulary program that is tailored to each individual student. As they learn more vocab words, they progress to higher levels, moving at a pace that suits their individual learning needs.

Students have 30 minutes of Membean that they need to complete each week by Monday night at midnight.

I will begin the year giving them 15 minutes of class time twice a week, so they should be able to complete their 30 minutes in class. Towards the end of the year, they will be required to complete 15 of their minutes outside of class time to prepare them for middle school (following 6th grade, their assigned minutes will increase, and they are typically not given class time to complete these minutes). If a student is absent on a Membean day, or if we do not have school on a Membean day (Tuesdays and Thursdays), students are responsible for completing these minutes on their own time to reach their required 30 minutes for the week.

The program recommends that students split up these 30 minutes throughout the week, completing them in at least two different days, to enhance the students' memory of vocabulary. Due to this recommendation, an extra 6 points is added to the student's grade for completing their vocabulary throughout at least two days each week, totaling 36/36 points for that week's Membean.
